Media Profile

PRISONTV is a unique video archive that started with prisoners from medium security Joyceville Institution near Kingston, Ontario. In 1991 they turned the video cameras on themselves to offer an insiders look at life behind bars.

All serving life sentences, the men were trained in television production and produced a half-hour TV show, called Contact Prison TV that was on-air for 6 seasons. Allowing convicts to do time on TV showed a genuine openness by the Correctional Services of Canada and the Joyceville prison officials, says producer and series creator Brian Judge.

Today, Judge has teamed up with some of the orginal crew members to share the content that first aired in Kingston 25 years ago. He continues to develop a digital platform helping shed light on the justice system, and its costs - both human and financial.
